Ambassadeurs showcases entrancing electronica on ‘Human Stranger’

Human Stranger is the sophomore LP from Sussex producer Mark Dobson, aka Ambassadeurs, whose craft specialises in uplifting electronica which is both euphoric and heartfelt. Not one to approach a project lightly, Ambassadeurs has been working on this album for quite some time, choosing to experiment with fresh ideas and rest and reset as needed. It’s very obvious upon listening that a lot of thought has gone into the record – exemplified by a major life event that triggered Ambassadeurs to finish the project.

In early 2018, after the loss of his sister, Ambassadeurs used music as a medium to channel his grief. In a statement posted on Facebook, he said that the completion of the album “was a process of therapy for myself and an expression of emotions which I could not let out any other way”.

As such, Human Stranger is a beautiful, blissful tribute. Opener ‘Nocturnes’ is a gentle introduction to the musical journey which follows, featuring traditional Japanese koto amidst oscillating bass and wordless backing vocals. Asian influence is noted throughout the album – Ambassadeurs has allowed himself to be inspired by a whole host of instrumentation on previous projects and it continues here, making way for a world of new textures, sounds, and aural vistas. Ambassadeurs enlists the help of indie R&B artist morgxn on ‘Roots’, whose lustrous vocals are a dynamic addition to the chilled-out track. ‘Takeda’ is a particular stand out with memorable sonics, as is ‘Rescue Me’ which opens the door for a slight notion of melancholia, ultimately leading back to the impressive closing track ‘Gone’ which elevates the listener to otherworldly heights, infusing melodic piano with staggering synthwork as it reaches an epic finish.

A solid record, Human Stranger is all-encompassing of humanity and emotional exposition. It is a feat of introspection, reflection, and the process of grief and healing, conveyed through a rich landscape of dazzling electronica that will both ground you and lift your spirits.
